The Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) is an international human rights organisation that advocates for persecuted and threatened ethnic and religious minorities, nationalities and indigenous communities. Our fundamental principles and the way we work are anchored in the STP’s Basic Program.
Project description
The STP would like to help two Asháninka communities to protect their territory in the border region between Peru and Brazil. The Asháninka communities in question are the “Dulce Gloria” and “Sawawo” from the District of Yurúa, Region Ucayali in Peru.
For the Asháninka from the Dulce Gloria and Sawawo communities to be able to fight against invasions by tree-fellers and the drugs mafia, it is important that they know the GPS coordinates of their territories and possess the corresponding documents. To date, all they have is a land title.
As a result of this project, the Asháninka communities will be able to defend themselves more effectively against illegal invaders.
Project aims
- Protection of indigenous territories with the help of GPS coordinates
- Determination of the borders of indigenous territories
- Document creation and registration of the communities’ own territories
- Suppression of illegal activities (e.g., destruction of the biodiverse environment and natural resources that the indigenous peoples need to secure their livelihood)
