Project description

MEDIATECA ONSHORE is a mobile art and culture platform in socially and ecologically sensitive areas in Guinea-Bissau. It is also an event location for workshops, seminars, archive work, municipal assemblies and a network for the transfer of sustainable local knowledge in the South-South dialogue.  The aim is to enable the exchange of practices in the field of art, agroecology and traditional knowledge as a contribution to social, economic and ecological justice.

In collaboration with local collectives, activities were initially on a “walk-in” basis, with long-term plans to create a self-governing space for cultural production and exchange. In this way, various workshops on, for example, media practice, sustainable and traditional architecture and cosmologies of the local biosphere are created. MEDIATECA ONSHORE runs a community-based media platform to react to conflicts between development and tradition and develop creative tools which encourage participation in transformative processes.

Project partners

AJUDA HEIßT HILFE e.V.
In 1991, an initiative group was set up in Berlin to provide general and public relations information about Guinea-Bissau. Its purpose was to support social projects in the country with donations in cash and in kind. Ajuda promotes initiatives by people in Guinea-Bissau who aim to improve living conditions for the local community. This includes helping the local population to maintain and develop its capacity to act autonomously, which can also involve various cultural aspects of the local community. To date, Ajuda has supported projects to build schools, supply drinking water and equip health centres.

GEBA FILMES
Geba Filmes is a not-for-profit collective of filmmakers, which was founded in 2007 with the aim of supporting sustainable cultural activities with moving images, videos, cinema and performing arts in Guinea-Bissau. Two of the founding members of Geba Filmes, filmmakers Sana na N'Hada and Flora Gomes, are moving picture pioneers in Guinea-Bissau. They were both trained in Cuba during the Portuguese Colonial War (1963-74).
