Projectdescription
This project aims to preserve and disseminate this Maasai indigenous knowledge on plants through a visually captivating children’s photobook and a 20-minute film. These educational tools will highlight how the Maasai interact with indigenous plants in their rangelands in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, capturing the knowledge shared by Maasai elders. These materials will not only safeguard the Maasai's ethnobotanical heritage but also inspire a new generation of Maasai children to reconnect with their environment. The project will allow participating Maasai elders to authors and producers of the photobook and film, respectively.
Projectaim
Expected project outputs:
- A children’s plant photobook with English/Maasai translations, documenting the traditional uses of indigenous plants. Copies of the book will be distributed in local schools, libraries, and community conservancies, making it accessible primarily to Maasai children, but also other people who might be interested.
- A 20-minute documentary film that will bring Maasai ethnobotany to life, deepening public awareness of how indigenous knowledge can be harnessed to preserve arid landscapes, promote sustainable living and conserve biodiversity.
The long term impact:
1) Revitalizing cultural identity by empowering Maasai children to learn about their heritage in a modern, accessible format—reconnecting them with their culture and environment.
2) Promoting biodiversity conservation by inspiring action to protect and restore indigenous vegetation, helping to combat climate change and preserve critical ecosystems.
3) Supporting Maasai rights by ensuring that the Maasai people are recognized as the authors of their own knowledge.
