We not only support and fund others, but are often active ourselves. In response to specific causes, or on the spur of the moment and our own initiative – we initiate campaigns, projects and events in support of organic farming  and the sustainable development of agriculture.

We have been working the small Global Field in Berlin since 2013, during which time we have changed not only our approach, but also our location: our field started off in Spandau, then it moved across town in 2016 to Marzahn-Hellersdorf for the IGA 2017 garden show, before finally coming home to roost in the People’s Botanical Gardens (Botanischer Volkspark) in Blankenfelde-Pankow.

At the moment, all the crops grow on 2,000 m² of land in the same proportion as the global average. How will we feed ourselves in future? It’s all a question of space: everyone on Earth gets 2,000 m² each if we divide the total area of arable land equally. The idea of the 2,000 m² Global Field is to give us all a feeling for the role we play in global agriculture. By reducing global challenges to the level of the individual, they can now be processed practically.

In Berlin-Pankow, we grow the world’s crops in the same proportion as they are cultivated globally – the whole world in a single field. In this way, we identify areas where global crops are distributed unequally and work together to find alternatives.

Project description

No other medium presents the highly complex temporal and physical interactions of environmental processes as well as soil. These interactions combine air, water, rock and biodiversity. Soil is, therefore, an excellent learning space for education about natural, environmental and social science-related interactions.
In the context of the project “Global Field – 2,000 m² for all”, we would like to raise the soil science-related profile of the Global Field by excavating a walk-in soil profile trench in a suitable part of the Global Field site in the Botanischer Volkspark Pankow, which we will use to demonstrate some of the fundamental chemical, physical and biological processes that take place in soil.

Project aims

  • Creation of a walk-in soil profile to demonstrate fundamental chemical, physical and biological processes that take place in soil.
  • The soil profile will remain as a permanent fixture in the Global Field education program.
