Project partner

Die Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is a private not-for-profit, non-political and non-denominational aid organisation. It advocates for secure food supplies, rural development and the conservation of natural resources. WHH provides help from a single source – from disaster relief to reconstruction and long-term development projects. The organisation supports people who require start-up aid that  enables them to lead a self-determined, dignified and socially just life. Wherever possible, WHH works alongside local partner organisations from the countries receiving aid.

Project description

The women from the Tounka Ti Danbo Don association in Somankidi Coura (Region Kayes) want to remodel their vegetable garden (2.3 ha) on the banks of the Senegal River in order to intensify their vegetable farming activities and reduce adverse effects on the environment. Part of their solution is to replace the current motorised pumps with solar-powered pumps. At the same time, they would like to increase their knowledge of growing and processing vegetables organically and improve their capability to maintain the solar energy system.

Project aim

The aim of the project is increase the security of the village’s food supply while conserving natural resources.

  • The women’s skills and capabilities are enhanced and, as a result, they will be able to produce high-quality fruit and vegetables in their improved perimeter throughout the year while caring for the environment;
  • The income of the group of women will increase through the sale of surplus produce in the village and in the town of Kayes (15 km away);
  • The health of the villagers, including that of the children, will be improved through the consumption of fresh and processed vegetable produce;
  • The environment will be protected against negative effects.
